Our Program
We provide healthy snacks to kids who are on free or reduced lunches during the school week but then have little or nothing to eat over the weekends. We package the snacks in grocery-type bags and then deliver them to the schools that have identified the children in need. The schools then make sure the kids have the bags before they leave school on Fridays for the weekend.
Where does our food come from?
Everywhere. Our donations come in the form of snacks, money, gift certificates and one small grant. Most of it we have to buy, because our main objective is for the food to be ‘kid friendly’. The kids especially like fresh fruit, like apples, when we can get it. We want the kids to be able to just open it and eat it or at the most quickly microwave it. Granola bars, instant oatmeal, pudding cups, and juice boxes are great.
How do the schools get the food?
We deliver it to each school, typically on Thursday mornings. The school representatives tell us how many bags they need, then we bag it up then deliver it. The kid’s identities remain totally anonymous. School nurses, counselors, principals and teachers identify the students in need and distribute the bags to them before they leave school on Fridays.
